My year in Bhutan has now come to an end. I would like to thank everyone who donated money to support the children with disabilities I had the privilege of working with. Your generosity has made a real difference in their lives.
The largest part of the donations is being used to fund the salary of the social worker at ABS who completed the Qigong Sensory Treatment (QST) course. She has now taken over many of my former clients, as well as new ones, ensuring that this therapy can continue after my departure. This is incredibly important for the long-term sustainability of the project. The donations will cover her salary for the next two years, giving ABS time to gradually integrate this position into its own budget. During this period, she is expected to provide therapy to around 80 children. Another major part of the donations was used to equip four children with cerebral palsy (CP) with tablets/iPads and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps. These devices allow the children to express their thoughts, feelings, needs, and wishes much more accurately, helping them communicate with the people around them and giving them a stronger voice in everyday life. In addition, I ordered several Qigong Sensory Treatment books for parents who wanted to learn more about the therapy so they could better support their children at home. As the books would have been too expensive for most families, I sold them at a highly subsidized price of just 500 Ngultrum (CHF 4.25). The donations also enabled me to provide the social worker with several practical tools to better structure classroom activities and support the children’s development. These included AAC buttons to encourage communication, a Time Timer to help children understand routines and transitions, and chewable sensory aids for children who frequently chew on objects or bite others. These chewables provide a safe alternative and help redirect this sensory need in a more appropriate way. Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Society Switzerland Bhutan (SSB) for funding the Qigong Sensory Treatment (QST) training for the social worker. Their support has made it possible for her to continue working with most of my former clients, ensuring that the project can continue long after my year in Bhutan has ended. Thank you once again to everyone who supported this project through donations, encouragement, or kind words. Your generosity will continue to benefit many children and their families for years to come. You can find the overview of the finances here.
