While my commitment and work are self-funded and voluntary, we need to raise the necessary funds to buy equipment. I am very grateful that my work colleague Nelleke Bos has agreed to be the coordinator for the fundraising and supports me from Switzerland while I work in Bhutan. The goal is to collect between 8'000 and 12'000 CHF, either in cash to buy the equipment or donations of equipment from companies.

What you can do

In Bhutan, many children with diverse abilities struggle to participate fully in school and daily life, among other things due to a lack of specialised materials. Schools with Special Education Needs programs and the ABS centre are working to support these children, but they often lack essential assistive devices such as customised writing aids, communication boards, mobility devices, and adaptive learning materials. Without these, children face significant barriers to education and independence during daily life.

While initiatives like the Assistive Technology Demo Centre in Thimphu are a step forward, many families and schools still do not have access to the resources they need. Imported assistive devices are expensive, and locally made solutions are still limited. By fundraising we can provide children with the assistive devices necessary to learn, communicate, and develop crucial skills at home and in school. And therefore, we create a more inclusive learning environment where every child has the opportunity to reach more of their full potential and be more independent in their daily life and with this, we can improve their quality of life.
So far, we have collected:

3830 CHF

Companies
If you have equipment to donate, please contact Nelleke Bos. Thank you in advance!

Especially AAC devices (Augmentative and alternative communication devices) and items for building up the physiotherapy infrastructure are essential.

Here's a list of equipment we still need and which we will be able to transport to Bhutan.
  • 2 x Massage balls with vibration
  • 1 x Peanut ball
  • 3 x Turntables with handle
  • 3 x Spiky balls
  • 3 x iPads with pictogram language
  • 5 x Communication buttons ("Taster")
  • Eating and drinking aids
Private Donors
If you would like to donate money, you can gladly do so through a donation account I have specifically set up for this purpose. Every donation helps to reach the goal of equipping the children with diverse abilities at ABS and improve their quality of life. I will regularly give account of what the money was used for in my blog and newsletter.

Thank you for supporting us!

What I will do

Beginning in August 2025 I will offer ABS my professional knowledge and experience as a physiotherapist specialised in working with children with diverse abilities.  My volunteering is completely self funded, which means that I will cover all the costs for travel and living myself and will not get any kind of payment for my work.

During the year of volunteering at ABS my aim is to bring a therapeutic aspect into the daily life at ABS. Besides conducting physiotherapy sessions for the children, it will also be very important to instruct the social workers and the parents in how to support the children in their daily life regarding handling and mobility.
